The neighbourhood sharing center is a project that was very dear to Beverly Colwell and the role she played in establishing a committee of concerned women from St Andrews By the Lake United Church, St Thomas Anglican Church, and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in 1965. The minister of her church had been visiting families in the area and came across many who had very little. Some were living in houses that were not winterized; many families were going hungry. The committee came up with the motto “share what you don’t need with those who do” and started collecting donations. There was an overwhelmingly favourable response from the community and donations started pouring in. The group initially worked out of the Women’s institute Hall, an old frame building under the old water tower on HWY 2. When this location was no longer available, they used vacant stores owned by Earl McEwan who lent them the space for free. Eventually the group was able to get City Hall to build them a permanent home beside Centre 70 just off Front Road. The building was completed in the fall of 1976. The Neighbourhood Sharing Centre operates from that location to this day.
